How much Coffee Can Patients with Kidney Failure Have if They are on Dialysis

2014-06-16 09:18

The following are some of the informations i collected about how much coffee can patients with Kidney Failure have if they are on Dialysis. Hoping they can help you.

Case 1. Now this is one I'm interested in... My mum (along with everyone else in ESRF) that I've spoken to have been specifically told not to drink coffee!

It's one of the things Mum misses most! And she only ever drank instant!

I'll be looking further into this one!

Case 2. I can only drink decaf, as I respond to the caffeine strongly, and my bp (blood pressure) shoots up.I've only been told that real coffee is higher in potassium than instant. But instant is no worse than any other drink.

Case 3. In some of my info here it says i can have half a cup of percolated coffee occasionally as it's high in potassium. But i just drink instant anyways. Love making iced coffee, addicted to the stuff.

Case 4 . At my unit yes they said Coffee has K in it, but they never said it's got heaps of K or anything. I have one latte every weekday morning(maybe I should cut down??) but at the unit during D they offer tea and coffee.. and sometimes even go to the cafe and buy "real" barista coffe... if I offer some $$ they will buy me one too (though every few weeks I shout them). Of course on the machine is the best time to have coffee or a hot choc because the machine will filter the K out while there. Seriously I think a little coffee can't be that bad... or can it? I might cut down before the next bloods and see what happens to my K (it has been up a bit).

From the above informations, we can see that as a patients who are on dialysis, you’d better avoid coffee, if you have to, you’d better consult your doctor before you make desision.
