Many people on dialysis, around 40-90% will experience itchy skin at one time or another. Then, why those patients will experience itchy skin? And how can they deal with it?
The exact cause is unknown, but the possible causes accounting for itching include dry skin, high levels of vitamin A in blood, calcium, high phosphorus levels, parathyroid steroid, beta-2 microglobin or increased histamine levels in the skin. In people who are hooked up on dialysis machine, they have probably progressed to Renal Failure, lots of toxins or harmful substances accumulated inside the body also contribute to itching.
How can dialysis patient deal with itchy skin?
For dialysis patients, taking daily shower varies from person to person. Usually, we don’t recommend patients on dialysis to take baths same day as he or she finished dialysis, but still, professional advice should be listened so as not to get infections. Another thing requires your attention is that don’t take hot baths because this may make the dry skin much worse.
Applying a good quality as well as high water-content lotion or cream without containing any perfumes helps relieve the symptom of itchy skin right after finishing the shower.
Wearing cotton clothing instead of other fabrics since cotton clothing can be less irritating. When one does laundry, try using detergent made special for babies or at least without perfumes. Sometimes, those on dialysis taking moderate dialysis exercises help, because exercises may leave the patients tired enough and easy to get asleep at night. In areas with arid climate, maybe humidifier works.
Some patients on dialysis find relief from itchy skin after exposure to ultraviolet light while others take capsaicin cream.
