Chronic Nephritis Basics
2014-03-25 16:07Chronic Nephritis (CN) is a kidney disease that results in damage to the kidney. It is a serious medical condition which is the eighth highest cause of human death. Glomerular disease refers to a group of disorders that attack the kidney’s blood filtering units, which are called glomeruli. Kidney disorders that involve glomeruli destruction fall into two categories. The first category is called glomerulonephritis and the second is called glomerulosclerosis. Both glomerular disease sub-groups can cause irreversible kidney damage which may lead to end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
By main location of inflammation, Chronic Nephritis can be divided into:
1. Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the glomeruli. (When the term "nephritis" is used without qualification, this is often the condition meant.)
2. Interstitial nephritis or tubulo-interstitial nephritis is inflammation of the spaces between renal tubules. Any questions? Chat with our online doctor.
As the kidneys inflame, they begin to excrete needed protein from the body into the urine stream. This condition is called proteinuria. Loss of necessary protein due to nephritis can result in several life-threatening symptoms. The most serious complication of nephritis can occur if there is significant loss of the proteins that keep blood from clotting excessively. Loss of these proteins can result in blood clots causing sudden stroke. Its cause can be due to a variety of factors, particularly issues with the immune system. One of the most common causes is an allergic reaction to medicine. This type of allergic reaction can cause both treatable and irreversible damage. Common over the counter medications, such as pain relievers, can lead to this renal failure. Prescription medications, such as those designed to combat cancer and depression, can also cause the inflammation.
Medical conditions that cause inflammation of the glomeruli and related kidney structures are referred to as glomerulonephritis or glomerular nephritis. In glomerulonephritis, acute and chronic inflammation damages the glomeruli and important kidney structures.
