Can Patients with PKD Drink White Wine

2014-04-10 15:20

PKD is a progressive disease with many cysts in kidneys. Treatment timely is very important. At the same time, healthy diet is benefit to slow the progression of cysts and lose of kidney function. Patients with PKD can not eat whatever they like due to their kidneys cannot work normally. Some people with PKD want to know whether they can drink white wine or not. I will explain below.

White wine is a wine whose colour can be straw-yellow, yellow-green, or yellow-gold coloured. It is produced by the alcoholic fermentation of the non-coloured pulp of grapes which may have a white or black skin. White wine has existed for at least 2500 years. White wine contains very little tannin and therefore little antioxidants that make red wine so interesting medically speaking. However, a team of researchers from Montpellier has developed a white wine enriched with polyphenols. The sulphur dioxide additive commonly used in wine is not harmful in the amounts used but its effects are feared among asthmatics. It can cause the onset of a crisis (Difficulty breathing). Symptoms such as difficulty breathing of PKD may indicate white wine is not good for patients with PKD. White wine is an acidic beverage with a pH ranging from 2.8 to 3.6. This acidity is an aggressive element to patients with high level uric acid.

White wine also contains antioxidants which can prevent LDL oxidation. But patients with PKD should limit intake of fluid and quit alcohol.

How the alcohol intake affects PKD?

Many data display that alcohol has great stimulation to your kidneys. Alcohol can excite activity of polocystic protein, lead to fluid within cysts secretes more quickly and then speed up the growth of cysts.

On the other hand, kidney recover of patients with PKD needs to favourable environment in their body. While, drinking wine often may cause elevation of blood pressure. Too much alcohol can leads to creatinine increase and metabolic acidosis. Patients will experience nausea, inappetence, headache and so on. Drinking can certainly increase renal burden by influencing nitrogen balance, adding proteinic decomposition.

In conclusion, drinking white wine is nearly not harm to healthy person, but drink wine for patients with polycystic kidney disease is equal to chronic suicide.
