What are the Five Stages of PKD

What are the five stages of PKD?

1. Emergence stage

Since PKD is an inherited disorder, patients’ gene instead of acquired factors determines the onset of it. Therefore, these patients are usually born with some renal cysts, but they commonly don’t have any symptom until they are above 20 years old.

2. Growth stage

If uncontrolled effectively, the sac filled with liquid will grow rapidly as patients get older, especially when they are at 30 to 40 ages. This period is called growth stage, in this stage the patients do not or only have mild kidney damage.

3. Swelling stage

It indicates patients’ condition is in Stage 3 PKD when their renal cysts are bigger than 4cm or some severer symptoms such as high blood pressure, proteinuria, blood in urine, side pain, breathing problems, etc.

4. Cyst rupture stage

As time goes on, numerous cysts will grow out of nephron and then they become so enlarged to rupture easily. Once these renal cysts rupture, it will lead to some severe infections such as urinary tract infections which will threaten patients’ life.

5. Renal Failure

If uncontrolled very well, patients’ condition will lead to renal failure, which is most severe among five stages of Polycystic Kidney Disease. At this stage, dialysis or kidney transplant must be used. In addition, some assistant treatments are also needed.
