Common Symptoms of Kidney Cyst

2014-04-03 10:56

A cyst is a closed pouch or sac filled with air or liquid. Simple kidney cysts are usually small round sacs that have a thin wall and are filled with a watery fluid. As people get older, cysts can form on the surface or in the nephrons of the kidneys. They can range in size from a small pea to a grapefruit. Cysts can also grow over time. Simple kidney cysts typically don't cause signs or symptoms. But when kidney cyst grows large enough, symptoms may include:

1. High blood pressure

Usually, when the cysts are less than 3cm in diameter, patients don't have any symptom. But as the cysts gradually grow, they will oppress surrounding renal cells and tissues, which leads to lack of blood supply and stimulates more secretion of renin resulting in high blood pressure. About 50% patients experience hypertension when their kidney functions are normal. If their kidney functions decline, morbidity of hypertension is even higher.

2. Pain in the side between the ribs and hip, stomach, or back

The cysts gradually grow over time, and stretch the capsule and renal pedicle or squeeze the surrounding organs. Therefore, patients will experience dull pain in one or two sides of their back. The pain is sharp when cysts rupture. Patients with kidney stone or urinary tract obstruction will present renal colic.

3. Infection

Patients with kidney cysts are more easily to get infections, especially urinary tract infections. In another case, infection will worsen the cysts. This is a vicious circle.

4. Abdominal mass

This is a common reason which patients to see a doctor. Most patients can sense enlargement of kidneys.

5. Proteinuria

Patients will present proteinuria, but the amount of protein in urine is less than 2g/d.

6. Hematuria

Strenuous exercises and infections may lead to cysts’ rupture and bleeding, because cysts wall has many arteries. If you want to personalized analysis, please email us at kidneyservice@hotmail.com
