2014-06-04 14:34

Anemia is the most common complication of stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease. There are many factors can induce it, but the most important of which is decreased production of erythropoietin by the kidney. Anemia is not a disease itself but a reflection of some other problems. It occurs when the balance between the normal rates of blood loss and blood production is disturbed. In a person with normal renal function, the finding of anemia on routine blood analysis would prompt a work-up to determine the ultimate cause.

Usually it need n’t to cure for CKD patients without other symptoms, but for patients with a sharp deterioration in renal function should take actions immediately, but for different patients the cure method is different.

1. Kidney transplant or dialysis: after a successful renal transplant, with the secretion function of kidney reversed, the symptoms of anemia will disappear. It is a effective therapy to cure this symptom and most of patients will feel better after 1~10 months treatment. But there are more patient than donor, so it is difficult for patients to get a suitable kidney.

2. Erythropoietin Can effectively stimulate the patient's red blood hematopoietic cell proliferation, differentiation and promote the synthesis of hemoglobin. It can replace or at least reduce the blood transfusion. It can works in 2~3 months. But it has many side effects, such as high blood pressure and lack of iron. Above all, it will took a large amounts of money and time, so many patients have to give up this method.

3. Blood transfusion: this kind of therapy suitable for patients with severe anemia, it has many side effects and will reduce the success rate of kidney transplant. So as a patients you should avoid transfusion too much blood.
